Zoom-in Photography Object

It’s quite frequent that we find an interesting photography object we would like to shoot; but the object was not in a good composition or not in a good position to capture; things like a strong backlight on the background; unmatched color combination; and lots of distractions surrounding the object. This condition forces us to think hard to get a perfect photography composition. The best way to solve these distractions is to get closer to the object; closer and closer and eventually you can fill the frame with the object as a whole; the whole frame. By zooming-in to fill the space (the frame) with the main object, you will not mix up in determining the point of interest in your photograph. But you can find a certain element in the picture and arrange it according to rules of thirds.

Look at the tiger in the above photograph; I focused on this tiger among several tigers surrounding. It’s in safari park off course and I aimed from the car window using my EF 70-200. I should’ve used a longer Tele lens something like EF 100-400 to get a closer look at the full tiger’s face. I was interested in her tongue and arranged it in one of the point of power according to rules of thirds. This is a simple example of zoom-in photography object by filling the whole space with an object.

You can do a more extreme close up if you have a longer Tele lens and for example; focus only to an eye. Open the lens as widely as possible (the term is Open lens) and use spot metering and arrange one focus point to the eye. You will create a dramatic close-up photo.

Another example is to emphasize the texture face of an old woman with long ears with natural lighting and you will produce a dramatic photo by zoom-in the full object into the frame. This old woman is one of Dayak tribes with long ears from the middle of Borneo that still left. As far as I know the young generations are not following their ancestors to maintain long ears. I had to pay Rp. 50.000 (around 6$ ) for one shot using my small compact digital camera.

One more example of zoom-in the photography object is uniform color or uniform tone or eliminates other elements that are not uniform with the main object. Have a look at the below photograph; by applying tighten photography cropping the main elements are the portrait of the kids with uniform red color; zoom-in the object fully without any other distracted elements of the main object.

Keep practicing, take a shoot anytime you want to make an automatically feeling what balance composition will result a good photograph. The more you practice, the better the result will be.
